Air travel is safe - so they say. But incidents and accidents occur and often deficiencies become a concern for those who analyze such events. Deficiencies show up in a supposable "safe environment" that have been known long before a tragedy hits.

The rules today and in contrast to the previous practiced principle of "preventive thinking" when it comes to air safety are: economic considerations on behalf of airline management and their overseeing government authorities. This contradictory liaison played a role in recent catastrophes.

Passengers don't have the same powerful lobbies as airlines. Their interest should be reflected and protected by parliamentarians. But only few of the later have if any understanding of this field at all. So there will be no protection against cost-benefit oriented requirements in how much has to be invested in an improvement of safety for the traveling public. At the same time worldwide standards are eroding and their actual status is not controlled by anyone, anymore.

Unfortunately it is a mistake to believe that in aviation the highest standards still apply. Safety costs and at times of low-cost traveling the airlines are remaining with narrowing margins of what they may invest into the required "more" save operation. But safety in aviation cannot simply be expected, - it has to be performed every day and for every flight.

Always happy landings!
